TOKYO (http://www.nandotimes.com) - Japanese and Chinese scientists exchanged views Tuesday on the possibility of using animal behavior to predict earthquakes.

Yoshihiro Hayashi, a professor of veterinary science at Tokyo University who helped organized the seminar, acknowledged the conventional scientific wisdom that earthquakes can't be predicted.

He added that the question of whether animal behavior can be used to foretell quakes is almost impossible to prove scientifically, and such findings may even do more harm than good by setting off panic if publicized prematurely.

"But it is an interesting possibility. Animals have evolved to avoid dangers," Hayashi said in a telephone interview.

Zheng Guorong, vice director of the earthquake department in Tangshan in Hebei Province in northern China, presented findings about fish that jumped out of the water as well as moles, bugs and hibernating animals popping out from the ground right before an earthquake.

Zheng and another Chinese researcher, Wang Anbin, told the gathering that they were able to use animal behavior along with other observed natural changes to predict several earthquakes in China.

Some Japanese scientists also are carrying out studies on how animals act before earthquakes. Mitsuaki Ota, a professor at Azabu University who has done research with dogs, also attended the seminar.

Earlier in the week, the Chinese scientists gave a similar presentation in Kobe, the city devastated by a quake that killed more than 6,000 people in 1995.

Thanks Jeff,

I just received another version of the same report. It's good to hear that the foreign scientists, at least, retain an open mind on the subject.

You probably heard that a 4.4M shook much of SoCal yesterday morning (centered near Nixon's old stomping grounds, Yorba Linda.)

Three days earlier Jack Coles had phoned me to predict on February 18, 21, or 26th, a 4 to 5M quake in SoCal, based on electronic glitches. Bingo!

My Seismic Window, based on the highest tides until June, was Feb 18-25, and I had expected a 3.5-6.0M in SoCal within 140 miles of L.A. Bingo!

The missing pet ads in the L.A. TIMES clearly indicated an upcoming moderate quake. Look at the following series of total missing pet ads:

February LA TIMES Missing Pet Ads

2-15...............26 ads
2-16...............28
2-17...............40
2-18...............46
2-19.............. 49
2-20.............. 49
2-21...............38
2-22...............26

When plotted this gives a classic curve that peaked out two days before the 4.4M quake, which equalled the maximum magnitude for any SoCal quake this year. Bingo!

When will 'High Science' in this country learn to listen to Nature?
