TORONTO - NASA is developing new technology that could prevent a lot of airline accidents by giving commercial pilots a clear view of their situation via virtual reality.

The high-tech cockpit display would overcome poor visibility when the real weather is bad.

NASA scientists hope to put the system into commercial airlines within five years.

They plan to map 80 per cent of the world's surface in an upcoming space shuttle mission.

The display would work like a detailed, three-dimensional video game, showing mountains, runways and other landscape features the plane approaches.

Researchers say it could dramatically cut the number of aviation accidents caused by poor visibility.
