- This amazing gyro was first engineered
in the '70s when there was no 3 inch diameter quartz available. This is
somewhat mysterious in itself. By the late 1970's, a technique to actually
grow pure quartz crystal was developed which permitted the building of
the gyros.
-
- Each gyro is created on a very expensive
5 axis grinder of which there are only 2 in the world accurate enough to
do the job. The grinding techology is so new it requires a full-time physicist
to do the data work for each gyro.
-
- The 'ring' of each of these crystal gyros
is completely unique and has to be computer programmed to be accurate to
its own resonance.
-
- This remarkable gyro technology cost
the federal government over a billion dollars over a period of 20 years
to develop. General Motors was stuck with the final development and then
sold the technology to Litton in a deal that was termed 'cheap.'
