- LONDON, March 14 (Reuters) - Fewer than one in six Britons know that
the millennium marks the 2,000th anniversary of Jesus Christ's birth, a
poll showed on Saturday.
-
- The Gallup survey also showed that only
two percent approved of the 750 million pounds ($1.3 billion) of national
lottery funds being lavished on the Greenwich Dome, a vast edifice being
built in a London suburb to house an exhibition billed as the ``millennium
experience.''
-
- ``I must say I was amazed,'' Anthony
King, professor of government at Essex University, said of the poll findings,
published in the Daily Telegraph newspaper.
-
- ``According to Gallup, most people see
the occasion as little more than an opportunity to dance, drink champagne,
stay up late with friends or travel abroad,'' King said. Churches have
criticised the government for failing to recognise the Christian point
of the millennium.
-
- Bishop of Maidstone Gavin Reid told the
paper: ``The government must make the connection between the millennium
and the significance of Jesus Christ clear within the Dome.''
