The Fight Over Quarantine Begins

By Patricia Doyle

As a health care worker she should understand that protective gear may not fully protect a worker from getting Ebola.  We don't know how they are getting it and must be cautious.

So, Kaci now has a lawyer from a nurses union fighting the quarantine. Nice.  Next will be the ACLU.

The problem is the government never thought this out.  As long as we have free travel between the Ebola hot zone and the US, with no restrictions, we will have a situation like Dr Spencer and Nurse Hickox and Mr Duncan.

How are the airport personnel going to really know if someone had been exposed to Ebola patients in W Africa?  The general public won't tell the truth…people will lie and act in their own selfish interests most every time.  Why would someone volunteer information like they just took care of their sister who died of Ebola, etc?   They will lie on the questionnaire just like Mr Duncan did.

Meanwhile, travelers from west Africa go about their lives exposing an Ebola-free country to Ebola.

Thus far our response to ebola has been nothing but one error and one fumble after another.  And so it will continue until a set policy for the entire country gets put into effect.

I did not think Newark Hospital would be a good place to do quarantine.  The hospital patients that they normally see are gun shot wounds and gang bangers.

I don't think MSF is too happy with the quarantine, either.  What are we to do?  We saw Dr Spencer's blatant disregard for public safety and his escapades around town after he had clear, obvious symptoms of being sick.  All we get in the press is how marvelously he acted and what a great guy he is.  Now  we have an angry nurse who probably does not have Ebola.  But she may.

The Newark hospital is not really set up for Ebola isolation or treatment.  They need to have decent places for people to do quarantine.  After all it is not forever, it is 21 days.

Guess we will have to watch and see if the quarantine works. This is not a disease we should take lightly.  No one is going into quarantine because of their race.  They are requested to do quarantine for their friends, neighbors and themselves.

If people continue to fight quarantine, then it will be forced on us and martial law may go with it.  We don't want that.  If a person has been working in some of the deadliest Ebola clinics in W Africa and dealing with the amount of virus and fluids that we know is in some of these W African death clinics, then it should be common sense to do a 21 day quarantine.

IF ONLY those nurses and Dr Spencer had stayed home, no one would be calling for in house quarantine.  We have a nurse who went flying to another city to try on wedding gowns, a lab tech who took a cruise, and Dr Spencer who took subways, cabs, and went bowling and jogging AFTER the first indication that he had Ebola.  So, yes, I understand governors who want in house quarantine for only those with highest risk of exposure.
