Damascus Terror Bombings Amid Farce 'Peace Talks' |
By Stephen Lendman |
Sunday blasts in Damascus killed dozens in a mainly Shia neighborhood,
many others injured, some critically. Over 20 Hezbollah fighters supporting government forces were among the casualties, deliberately targeted by a car-bomb detonated near a bus stop. When rescue workers arrived, two suicide bombers blew themselves up. ISIS claimed responsibility for the incident. Most opposition groups involved in talks match its extremism - showing hope for resolving things diplomatically is pure fantasy. Syrian UN envoy/chief peace talks negotiator Bashar al-Jaafari linked the incident to terrorists and their foreign backers, indicating Washington and its rogue allies want war, not peace, dooming talks before beginning them - accusing America and Britain of acting like spokespersons and guardians of opposition terrorist groups. “We don’t deal with terrorists,” he stressed. “There are foreign powers endorsing foreign agendas, aiming at putting political pressure on the Syrian government by using terrorism as a political weapon…It’s a truly surreal and chaotic situation.” He compared Geneva III arrangements with 2014 Geneva II mistakes, saying: “When the Security Council resolution (2254) states that the broadest possible spectrum of the position be brought together by the Syrians themselves, and this resolution is being violated, then it means that there are some who want to impose a fait accompli by selectivity and double standards.” Over the weekend, Syrian Information Minister Omar al-Zoubi said “(w)e will neither sit down directly with terrorists, not have dialogue with them” under any format. “There will be no progress on the political front unless there is an agreement among states over naming the terrorist organizations. We will do what’s in our national interest.” Opposition terrorist groups continue making unreasonable demands designed for rejection, including ending Russia’s devastatingly effective aerial campaign, aiding Syrian ground forces retake lost territory. Longtime pro-Western imperial stooge UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon did nothing to support Syria and its legitimate government throughout five years of Obama’s war. On Sunday, he issued a duplicitous statement “urging all parties to put the people of Syria at the heart of their discussions, and above partisan interests.” He’s in lockstep with Obama’s aggression devastating them. Arab League/UN envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura represents Western and Saudi-led Gulf States’ interests exclusively. He’s no legitimate peace talks interlocutor. He duplicitously called Geneva III “an historic occasion not to be missed,” ignoring a US-orchestrated charade doomed to fail. Washington intends endless war until Syria is transformed into a US vassal state. Opposition terrorist groups deplore peace. They’re in Geneva to demand, not negotiate. Chances for resolving things diplomatically are virtually nil - because Syria has no legitimate peace partner. Stephen Lendman lives in Chicago. He can be reached at lendmanstephen@sbcglobal.net.
