- Temuco, Chile: The
legend of the Chupacabras reached the Gorbea Commune. In the past 16 hours,
16 farm birds were found dead under strange circumstances, with their bodies
being found practically devoid of blood
-
- As was reported, the stranges detail of the case is that
in the middle of the backyard of the affected house, located on Salas Street
in the heart of the commune, no traces could be found of any animal that
could have been responsible for the slayings.
-
- When Carabineros (Chilean State Police) reached the area,
a call was placed to veterinarian Gerardo Urrutia, who was unable to ascertain
the cause of death after examining the animal carcasses.
-
- Specialists shall conduct a new battery of tests on
the animals even as local residence are evincing their fear of the Chupacabras

Silvia Puschel shows off the mutilated animals found inside the
chicken coop early on Thursday morrning. All of them sported bite marks
on their rear quarters (tail).
-
- The deaths of 16 hens mutilated under strange circumstances
caused concern among residents of Gorbea. The dead animals were found in
the backyard of a house on Salas Street in the center of the urban sector
of said commune.
-
- The case, which left the community and the police at
a loss for answers, took place on Thursday morning in the backyard of a
house belonging to Olga Puschel Opitz, 92, who became aware of the animal
deaths around 8 o'clock in the morning. .
-
- "I went outside to feed my hens when I realized
that most of "my pets" were dead. All of them had bites on their
rear quarters and their feathers were scattered all over the back yard."
-
- The affected party explained that as a result of the
violence with which the hens were attacked, their viscerae were scattered
all over the yard
-
- While a logical explanation remains to be found to that
night's events, residents of this sector claim that it is the handiwork
of the mythic "Chupacabras" given the strange wounds and scratches
found on the animals' bodies.
-
- Greatly concerned by the event, Mrs. Olga told this newspaper
that during all her years of living in the area, no similar event had ever
taken place. "I have spent my life in the countryside raising animals.
I can distinguish when a dog, a fox o a guiña devour a chicken.
Furthermore, it is very hard to believe that one such animal could have
gotten into my chicken coop, since the entire back yard is fenced off."
-
- The strangest detail of this story is that no prints
were found in the back yard that could point to the presence of some sort
of animal. "The hens were featherless, all of them showing bites on
their rear quarters (tail) and scattered over the back yard. But there
were no footprints or marks in the chicken coop," insisted Mrs. Olga..
-
- The house's garden measures approximately 15 meters wide
by 25 meters long; its perimeter is protected by a tall wooden fence. Furthermore,
the house borders neighboring back yards, making it even harder for an
animal to enter
-
- Even more curious is the fact that the strange phenomenon
took place again the following day. Another eight hens were found dead
under similar conditions. This time, the birds had been locked in the chicken
coop by their owner--this did not keep them from being mutilated. "All
of this is very strange. There are no animals in the house. The back yard
and the chicken coop are well protected, there's no way of getting onto
the premises. It may seem like madness, but the only explanation is that
a creature from another planet is responsible for these killings,"
remarked Silvia Puschel, the affected owner's niece.
-
- Agents of the Carabineros reached the scene and after
verifying the event, summoned a veterinarian to ascertain the cause of
the animal deaths.
-
- Veterinarian Gerardo Urrutia analyzed one of the hens
and after a number of different tests stated that he was unable to establish
a cause of death. The specialist explained that there exists the possibility
that a feral feline or a mink may have attacked the birds, but this is
only a hypothesis. "The only thing that's clear is that the birds
were attacked by a predator, since it ripped out their entrails and left
fang-marks [on their bodies]. He added that the only thing made clear
by the necropsy was that the hen showed severe damage to its liver.
-
- Urrutia also says that the possibility exists that a
malicious person may have poisoned the birds and that rodents are responsible
for the injuries
-
- The Chupacabras is, without a doubt, one of the most
pursued mysteries of the time. However, this curious creature which has
rightfully earned its classification as "impossible" was seen
by over 200 witnesses -- including 40 police officers-- in 1995. Eyewitness
descriptions have determined that the creature is a little over a meter
tall, has a humanoid face, has a certain resemblance with a kangaroo or
small dinosaur and has large read eyes. It stands on powerful, three-clawed
legs and is covered by coarse, dense hair, and has a crest --- as though
all this did not suffice-- that changes colors with its environment, and
can also fly. Witnesses agree that it produces a nauseating odor.
