ATLANTA - The percentage of Americans who have tuned into radio stations via the Internet doubled in the second half of 1998, according to a study released this week.

The Arbitron Company said its study, conducted with Edison Media Research, indicated that 13 percent of all Americans have listened to radio on the Internet, up from only 6 percent, based on its previous study, conducted in July, 1998.

At total of 1,350 people participated in the latest study, which was released at the Radio Advertising Bureau and Marketing Leadership Conference in Atlanta.

According to Arbitron, 41 percent of Americans now have access to the Internet, either at home or at work, with an additional 9 percent accessing the Internet through schools and libraries. This was up from the 30 percent level reported in the July study.

Users spend an average of four hours per week online at home, and 3.4 hours weekly from work.

Arbitron, a media and marketing research firm, is a unit of Ceridian Corp.
