- ATWATER, Minn. (AP) -- About 500 people ate green cookies and "meteor
burgers" as they watched divers search for the cause of a mysterious
and much-publicized hole in the ice on Tadd Lake.
-
- Three divers spent 45 minutes under the
ice Saturday and found nothing out of the ordinary, Fire Chief Greg Tauer
said. They did bring up a turtle, rocks and a saucer-shaped drip pan from
a stove. The town will keep those items as souvenirs.
-
- "Maybe it's like the X-Files.' It's
unsolved, and it'll continue," Police Chief Reed Schmidt said.
-
- Divers may return after the spring thaw
to look again.
-
- Star-shaped holes were discovered last
Sunday on the ice-covered lake in west-central Minnesota after a woman
reported hearing a loud, sonic-boom type noise. Similarly shaped holes
were discovered last week on two other bodies of water in the area.
-
- Some scientists doubt the holes were
caused by meteors as some people have speculated. They think the holes
were caused by methane gas buildup or blue ice, which is frozen sewage
fallen from an airplane.
-
- Whatever, residents are having fun with
the situation, even joking about " little green aliens" in their
lake.
-
- The Atwater Fire Department distributed
120 green cookies shaped liked gingerbread men during the dive. Anna's
Pantry and Family Restaurant featured a "meteor sandwich" as
its special.
