- DENVER (Reuters) - Police investigating the murder of child beauty queen
JonBenet Ramsey believe a flashlight found in the home -- wiped clean of
fingerprints -- may have been used in the murder, Fox News Channel reported
Friday.
-
- ``What intrigued police is that there
were no fingerprints or residue found on the flashlight.... It appeared
someone had opened it up, pulled the batteries out and wiped them off,''
Fox reported. The six-year-old's body, with a nine-inch fracture on her
skull, was found in the family's home in Boulder on Dec. 26, 1996. She
had also been strangled, according to the coroner's report. Fox said Boulder
police offered the flashlight theory when they made their formal presentation
to the district attorney's office in June. A grand jury is investigating
the case. The flashlight was found in the house when police arrived, but
it was not noticed for several hours because police at first thought it
was one of their own, a source close to the case said. That there were
no prints found on it could indicate that the flashlight was brought into
the house by an intruder, the source added. It was not known if the Ramseys
had identified the flashlight as belonging to the household.
-
- A spokeswoman for District Attorney Alex
Hunter had no comment on the report. Published reports have suggested that
a golf club could have caused the head wound or the child may also have
hit her head against a granite counter in the house.
-
- No arrests have been made and no suspects
named, but police have said the parents John and Patsy Ramsey were ``under
an umbrella of suspicion.'' They now live in the Atlanta area, with their
son Burke, and have denied any connection with their child's murder.
