- Dear Online friend:
-
- Following is an excerpt of a speech I
gave to the Computer and Communications Industry of America on October
8,1997. Please feel free to pass this along to anyone you think might be
interested in this important issue facing our country. We must ensure that
people are aware of the Administration's attempt to reduce our freedoms.
If you have any questions or comments please do not hesitate to contact
my office. I look forward to hearing from you.
-
- Sincerely,

- Ashcroft Warns of FBI Wanting To Read

- "I am deeply troubled by the Administration's
insistence that we should turn over the keys to our individual privacy
to federal agents. In recent weeks, we have heard blood-chilling tales
of abuse of innocent citizens by the IRS. Only a few months ago, the nation
was shocked to learn of snooping in tax returns by IRS employees. Before
that, we discovered that the FBI had handed over hundreds of sensitive
private files to political operatives in the White House. The outrages
against privacy committed by federal law enforcement agencies means one
thing: Now, more than ever, we must protect citizens' privacy from the
excesses of an arrogant, overly powerful government."
