- A computer hacker has broken into a top-secret
file containing Britain's military secrets.
-
- Defence chiefs are so alarmed they have
asked American spy chiefs at the Pentagon to help trace the culprit. And
Defence Secretary George Robertson has ordered a top-level investigation.
-
- The hacker was able to see details of
battle plans and the locations of nuclear missile bases, details of arms
caches in Northern Ireland and personal details of top military personnel.
-
- It is understood the hacker gained access
to the secret section of the MoD's 'DAWN' database - just two levels down
from the highest security.
-
- He was exposed when he tried to go up
a level and gave the wrong password.
-
- Insiders say the MoD's own magazine Focus
might have inadvertently aided the hacker by publishing details of the
DAWN system for the first time.
-
- Last night a senior MoD source said:
"One theory is that the hacker was a former employee. If this is the
case any information could easily be sold to a foreign power."
-
- An MoD spokesman said: "The DAWN
system has many safeguards to prevent people gaining access. We have every
confidence in those safeguards."
