Danish Middle-Aged Men
Are More Fertile Than Young Men
1-20-99

COPENHAGEN (AFP) - Men in their 50s have higher sperm quality than that of younger men, according to two studies published Tuesday that examined the sperm of 9,600 Danish men.

The surveys, published in the daily Information, also show that sperm quality has decreased by 2 percent over the past two decades.

"It is surprising to note that men in their 50s secrete such rich sperm, while we had previously thought that sperm quality decreased with age," Jens Peter Bonde, a doctor of industrial medicine at Aarhus Kommunehospital, told the newspaper.

The studies also revealed that tobacco and bad working conditions affect sperm quality less than previously thought.

In fact, a man's reproductive capacity is determined at an almost embryonic stage in his development and changes little during life, Bonde said.

The findings were based on two studies. The first, which studied the effect of the workplace on fertility starting in 1985, followed 1,000 fertile men born between 1950 and 1970.

The second studied 8,600 men who visited a Danish clinic for fertility problems between 1968 and 1992.
