The migrant surge at the southern border along Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California gets a lot of attention because of the number of migrants trying to cross, legally and illegally, into the United States. However, it isn't the only place where migrants have been surging.

While law enforcement might not be as focused on the north as the south, weather is omnipresent, and it is particularly harsh in the winter. People, including families with children, have frozen to death trying to cross into the United States.

With all eyes on the southern border, human traffickers and illegal migrants have started viewing the northern U.S. border as an easier place to slip into the country. In the Swanton Sector (parts of New York, Vermont, and New Hampshire), agents saw an 846 percent increase in January. According to the Daily Caller, the increase has some residents in the area worried as illegal immigrants cross their property, break into their vehicles, and knock on their doors.

While the total numbers aren't as distressing as those coming out of the southern states, the percentage indicates a distressing upward trend.

Also, with that increase in illegal immigrant traffic from the north, the inflow of drugs along the northern border has increased. Border Patrol  agents  siezed 1,500 pounds of drugs at the  northern  border between October 2022 and February 2023. This is significantly more than the 1,300 pounds seized in all of fiscal year 2022,  according  to CBP data.

Part of the problem is a lack of agents to enforce the northern border, which isn't viewed as as high a priority.

"We have less agents in the field today than we did a few years ago, and we're catching more than that's can be attributed straight to the administration's lack of border security.," National Border Patrol Council President Sean Walsh told the DCNF .

The 5,525-mile-long border between the U.S. and Canada has around 2,000 agents patrolling it, Republican New York Rep. Elise Stefanik said in a  statement .

With the weather warming up, the numbers are likely to surge again. The harsh winters along the northern border serve as a deterrent, although it did not stop illegal immigrants from risking their lives to enter the U.S. from the north.

Rather than trying to immigrate safely and legally, which will take time, they opt for immediate satisfaction, and sometimes, pay with their lives. In January 2022, an Indian family with two children was found frozen to death north of the U.S. border. They had tried to cross the border at a time when the temperatures dropped to as low as -40F.

Yet, the Biden Administration continues to say the border is secure while taking actions that essentially invite illegal immigrants to the country, whether from the south or north. Democrats continue to proclaim the border is secure.

Sadly, despite the CBP agents' hard work, they lack support from Washington D.C. Democrats. CBP faces an increasingly overwhelming task. However, those who want the U.S. to remain a sovereign country need to remain vigilant. All our borders need to be maintained, not just the southern one.
