Lavrov In Washington - Hold the Optimism |
By
Stephen Lendman |
On Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with his counterpart
Rex Tillerson and Trump in Washington. Deep-seated US hostility toward Russia is longstanding - during the Cold War over ideological differences, currently because of Moscow’s sovereign independence and opposition to Washington’s rage for endless imperial wars, aiming for unchallenged global dominance. Russia and China are major obstacles in the way of America achieving its goals - regime change planned for both countries. Deep state forces in Washington want pro-Western governance replacing their sovereign independence - color revolutions or naked aggression their strategies of choice. Unthinkable nuclear war perhaps is inevitable if neocons infesting Washington aren’t stopped. Nothing in prospect gives hope. Straightaway in office, Trump was co-opted, his high-minded campaign rhetoric about noninterventionism and improved relations with Moscow forgotten - based on policies instituted so far. Wednesday’s meeting with Sergey Lavrov changed nothing. America’s agenda remains unbending. Rhetoric is willfully deceptive. US policymakers notoriously say one thing and do another. Following Trump’s meeting with Lavrov, a White House statement said the president “emphasized the need to work together to end the conflict in Syria, in particular, underscoring the need for Russia to rein in the Assad regime, Iran, and Iranian proxies.” He “raised Ukraine, and expressed his Administration’s commitment to remain engaged in resolving the conflict and stressed Russia’s responsibility to fully implement the Minsk agreements.” “He also raised the possibility of broader cooperation on resolving conflicts in the Middle East and elsewhere. (He) further emphasized his desire to build a better relationship between the United States and Russia.” Fact: Trump escalated Obama’s war on Syria. Destroying its sovereignty and territorial integrity, along with pro-Western puppet governance replacing Assad remain US goals. Fact: Syria’s military, greatly aided by Russia, Iran and Hezbollah continue combating US-supported terrorist groups - a struggle to continue as long as the threat is active. Fact: Russia and Donbass freedom fighters alone fully observe Minsk agreement terms. Kiev flagrantly breaches them - with full support and encouragement from Washington, wanting endless conflict, not resolution. Fact: Trump appointed neocon generals want ongoing Middle East and Afghan wars escalated, not ended. Fact: Trump approved supplying Kurdish YPG fighters in northern Syria with heavy weapons. An Afghan surge is likely, authorizing thousands more US combat troops for a lost cause, a war lost years ago, never publicly acknowledged. Fact: As for improved US relations with Russia, hold the optimism. A century of unremitting Washington hostility persists. Fact: White House rhetoric, claiming a “desire to build a better relationship” runs counter to unbending US policy. Fact: Extreme hostility toward Russia, especially Vladimir Putin, from virtually the entire Congress and major media is clear evidence of nothing in prospect changing things. Fact: What Trump may or may not feel in his heart of hearts is irrelevant. Realpolitik overrides whatever interferes with America’s imperial agenda. As long as Russian sovereign independence exists, it remains a prime US target for regime change. The threat of Washington preemptively launching nuclear war to achieve its imperial aims is ominously real. Stephen Lendman lives in Chicago. He can be reached at lendmanstephen@sbcglobal.net.
