MERS Still Spreading In Mideast |
By
Patricia Doyle |
Hello Jeff - It seems like people have forgotten about Middle Eastern
COV but it is still spreading there there with latest cases showing up in
Thailand among migrants from Oman. This indicates that MERS
COV is still circulating in Oman and it would not surprise me in the least
to see cases show up in Europe or the US and Canada in migrants from the
Middle East. Virtually, none of the migrant illegals are being vetted for diseases. We need to stop this influx. Patty http://timesofoman.com/article/97565/Oman/Health/Fresh-case-of-MERS-reported-in-Oman A new case of the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) -- also known as [MERS-coronavirus] -- has been found in a 67 year old Omani national, the Ministry of Health said. The patient was suffering from an acute respiratory infection and has been cured after treatment in a local [Muscat] government hospital, the ministry stated on Tuesday [29 Nov 2016]. -- communicated by: ProMED-mail <promed@promedmail.org> [This is the 8th laboratory confirmed case of MERS-CoV infection reported by Oman since September 2012. In mid-2015 and early 2016 there were 2 cases of laboratory confirmed MERS-CoV infection in Omani nationals hospitalized in Thailand shortly after arrival from Oman (see prior ProMED-mail postings below), suggesting that sporadic transmission was occurring in Oman. According to the 4 Nov 2016 Communicable Disease Threats Report from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, as of 4 Nov 2016 there had been a total of 1845 laboratory confirmed cases of MERS-CoV infection including 704 deaths (reported case fatality rate of 38.2 per cent) reported by countries worldwide. With the addition of this newly confirmed case in Oman, and the 18 cases and 2 deaths reported from Saudi Arabia since 4 Nov 2016, the global tally is 1864 cases, including 706 deaths. Information on the epidemiologic investigation results on this newly confirmed case would be greatly appreciated. We would particularly like to know of possible high risk exposures of this individual in the 14 days preceding the onset of illness.
