REGINA - Up to 1,000 elk in Saskatchewan will have to be killed after inspectors discovered more cases of a rare but highly-contagious disease among herds in the province.

Officials with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency discovered 21 new cases of chronic wasting disease at 10 ranches. The only elk spared will be ones housed separately.

Chronic wasting disease affects the elk's nervous system and is fatal. In December 1,500 were put down after coming into contact with 14 infected elk.
