- REGINA - Up to 1,000 elk
in Saskatchewan will have to be killed after inspectors discovered more
cases of a rare but highly-contagious disease among herds in the province.

- Officials with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency discovered
21 new cases of chronic wasting disease at 10 ranches. The only elk spared
will be ones housed separately.

- Chronic wasting disease affects the elk's nervous system
and is fatal. In December 1,500 were put down after coming into contact
with 14 infected elk.
