- HARARE -- Zimbabwean social
activist/author-poet Masimba Biriwasha warns on a medical website
of the 'silent, uncontrollable drug-resistant TB+AIDS epidemic in Zimbabwe"
due to the socio-economic meltdown of the dictator-ruled, southern African
country.
-
- He warns on the medical website "RH Reality Check"
that inZimbabwe (pop.14-million) 'the deadly combination of TB and
AIDS-HIV epidemics is now igniting a silent and uncontrollable epidemic
of drug resistant-TB that will negate all previous national health gains.
An estimated two-thirds of Zimbabweans with TB are also infected with HIV,'
he warns.
-
- Aso, the raging XDR-TB+AIDS epidemics in neighbouring
South Africa also pose a direct threat to this already vulnerable population
in Zimbabwe.
-
- Biriwasha also warns that the problem is worsened even
more by the fact that South Africa already is home to some three million
Zimbabwean refugees who still routinely migrate between the two countries
(with food supplies for relatives) -- and whose growing physical
frailty has also created a large pool of highly-mobile TB+AIDS infected
people -- who are not receiving any kind of medical care.
