- LONDON -- Infected hospital
staff have given five patients potentially deadly Hepatitis C, health officials
revealed last night.
-
- The victims were uncovered after an alert to 2,000 women
who underwent Caesarean births or hysterectomies. One of the
two staff found to be infected with the liver virus was a doctor. The pair
worked in obstetrics and gynaecology departments at 28 hospitals across
the UK.
-
- Yesterday health chiefs urged 3,000 MORE women to undergo
screening - as a precaution. They stressed the likelihood of
them having caught the disease was slight compared with the first batch
- because the operations they underwent were less major.
-
- Public health consultant Dr Maida Smellie said: "I
understand this news may cause anxiety to some people. But I want to emphasise
that the risk is very small."
