- Although only 131 people have died from
the H5N1 avian flu virus since 2003, European officials are predicting
some flu pandemic as "inevitable". European experts claim that
millions will be killed.
-
- Director-general of the EU's health and
consumer protection department Robert Madelin commented: "It's when
and not if." In addition, the World Bank predicts that 70 million
people worldwide could die from a flu outbreak.
-
- Great Britain's Department for Environment,
Food and Rural Affairs issued the statement: "The virus [H5N1] may
continue to be introduced in some parts of the EU and eventually arrive
in the U.K. because of the potential for limited mixing at some contact
points between the existing wild water-bird populations from Eastern Europe
with the populations in the EU."
