- SIDON, Lebanon -- At least
16 civilians were killed and 33 others wounded Sunday when Israeli warplanes
struck residential areas in southern Lebanon, medics and police said.
-
- Their deaths bring to 119 the number of people killed
in the Israeli offensive which began last Wednesday, according to a foreign
media tally based on official and medical sources. Another 313 have been
wounded.
-
- Israel has pledged to wipe out Hezbollah since the capture
last Wednesday of two of its soldiers firing of rockets into Israeli towns
and villages.
-
- Parts of southern Beirut, the Hezbollah stronghold, have
been pounded into rubble by Israeli air strikes since Saturday.
-
- Lebanese infrastructure including Beirut's international
airport, sea ports, roads, bridges, a lighthouse and a fuel depot have
also been hit.
-
- Most of the civilians killed in the south of the country
on Sunday were in their homes when the bombs or missiles from Israeli jets
struck, Lebanese police said.
-
- Eight bodies were extracted from the debris of two joining
houses in the village of Aabba, near Nabatiyeh, around 70 kilometres (40
miles) south of the capital.
-
- Rescue workers said efforts to reach the other bodies
were hampered by ongoing bombing raids in the area.
-
- Israeli helicopters firing missiles destroyed a two-storey
house in Nabatiyeh, killing three people and wounding 11 others, including
three young children, police said.
-
- Four civilians were killed and 10 others hurt when their
home in the village of Burj Shemali was also hit.
-
- Israel on Saturday said it regretted causing civilian
casualties in Lebanon, after its jets killed 18 civilians -- including
11 children -- fleeing their southern village. But it put the blame on
Hezbollah, saying the militia was deliberately operating in civilian areas.
-
- Twenty-four Israelis have been killed in the violence
-- 12 civilians who have died in rocket attacks, and 12 servicemen.
