- After roughly 5 million German civilians were rounded
up and made prisoners of war in 1944/45 Europe became dotted with huge
open-field barbed wire fenced camps, where these captives were held like
cattle and subjected to the brutal elements of sun, heat, rain, snow and
frost, given ever diminishing rations as ordered by Eisenhower until more
than one million Germans had perished from hunger and disease in these
open fields.
