- Betting big on India, US-based telecom technology major
Qualcomm Inc on Friday said it would open a research and development centre
in the country this year to write software for CDMA-based technology.
-
- "India is going to be a major source of research
and development for Qualcomm and we will have a centre here this year where
developers will write software for CDMA based technology", Qualcomm
Inc chairman and CEO Irwin Mark Jacobs told newspersons in New Delhi on
Friday.
-
- Pointing out there would be "significant" investment
as and when the centre opens this year, Jacob said the company was looking
at various places and has not yet finalised on any particular area.
-
- The centre could be used for writing software for CDMA
based applications later, he said.
-
- "We are working towards that and we will make a
formal announcment. We have just begun to look at recruitment of potential
employees for the centre", he said.
-
- He declined to state any initial figure on the number
of people to be taken in the centre.
-
- With the Code Division Multiple Technology (CDMA) based
phones having made strong inroads into Indian market through operators
like Reliance and Tatas, Qualcomm is upbeat on its growth in India.
-
- "In India, we are anticipating CDMA-based telephone
usage to be over 20 million by the year-end", Jacob said while adding
with strong momentum and unified licensing in future of CDMA is bright
in India.
