- BANGKOK - Unidentified assailants
set fire to 18 schools and stormed a military camp, killing four soldiers,
in near simultaneous raids in southern Thailand Sunday, an official said.

- The attacks took place around the Muslim-dominated southern
province of Narathiwat , said military spokesman Lt Gen Phalangun Krahan.

- He said there were no reports of casualties in the school
fires. But the assailants shot and killed four soldiers when they raided
a military camp in Narathiwat, taking 103 assault rifles.

- No other details were immediately available about the
attacks, the number of people involved, or their identities. Police were
investigating the raids.

- Narathiwat is one of the four Muslim-majority provinces
in Thailand , which is predominantly Buddhist.
