- TIKRIT, Iraq - One US soldier
was killed and two wounded in a mortar attack on a US base in a town north
of the Iraqi capital on Friday, a US military spokesman said on Saturday.
-
- The attack in Balad, 75 kilometres (45 miles) north of
Baghdad, occurred at about 5:00 pm (1400 GMT) and the soldier was killed
by shrapnel, said Sergeant Robert Cargie, a spokesman for the 4th Infantry
Division.
-
- He said coalition troops searched vehicles in the area
after the attack and detained six suspects, adding that the wounded soldiers
were in stable condition.
-
- The latest death brings to 213 the number of US fatal
combat casualties since US President George W. Bush declared an end to
hostilities in Iraq on May 1.
-
- On Friday, one US soldier was killed and another injured
when insurgents shot down a reconnaissance helicopter in the volatile town
of Fallujah, west of Baghdad.
-
- Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt told reporters that assailants
wearing black vests marked "press" pulled up at the wreckage
site and began firing rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs) shortly after the
crash.
-
- They were chased by US troops who captured four of them,
he said.
-
- Also Friday, a fuel convoy was attacked west of Ramadi,
100 kilometers (62 miles) west of the capital, with an improvised explosive
device (IED), small arms fire and RPGs wounding three people, Kimmitt said.
-
- He said two of the wounded remain hospitalised and one
was released.
-
- A US army patrol was attacked on the southern outskirts
of Baghdad with an IED and small arms fire at noon on the same day, according
to Kimmitt.
-
- He said the soldiers' Humvee vehicle burst into flames
and flipped over and that there was an undetermined number of casualties.
