-
- "We pay tribute to the 260 police officers who died
as martyrs in attacks on police stations and other attacks in Baghdad and
elsewhere in Iraq," General Sami al-Waili told the Iraqi TV station
set up by the US-led coalition.
-
- He said the new police force formed following the ousting
of Saddam last April had "seen heavy sacrifices in action for the
maintenance of law and order."
-
- His statement was made on the 31st anniversary of the
creation of the Iraqi police under Saddam's former regime.
-
- At least nine police stations have been targeted in car
bomb attacks in Baghdad and areas south of the capital during the last
two months. The attacks are blamed on Saddam supporters targetting "collaborators"
