- Three Palestinians were killed overnight Friday by Israel
Defense Forces troops in two separate incidents in the Gaza Strip.
-
- In the first instance, troops shot dead a Palestinian
in an off-limits military zone in the Gaza Strip after dark Friday, an
IDF spokesman said.
-
- The shooting took place near the southern Gaza town of
Rafah, an area where
-
- Palestinian militants and IDF soldiers clash almost daily.
-
- The Palestinian was later identified as 16-year-old Jihad
al-Akhras, 16, of the Rafah refugee camp. Doctors at Rafah Hospital told
Reuters that he had been shot six times in the head, chest and back.
-
- Also Friday, IDF troops shot and killed two Palestinians,
armed with grenades and an explosive device, crawling toward a security
barrier separating the Gaza Strip from Israel, military sources confirmed
Saturday.
-
- The men, wearing green and black military uniforms, were
killed deep inside a forbidden area near Nahal Oz on the Gaza side of the
fence where two recent attacks on Israeli soldiers had taken place, the
military said.
-
- Palestinian sources identified the men as Ashraf al Haya,
20, of Gaza City and Khalil Sukr, 22, of Gaza City.
-
- The military said the men were carrying several grenades
and a 25 kilogram explosive device.
-
- Late Friday, security services lowered a high state of
alert in the north, after one had been declared in the Wadi Ara region,
near the city of Umm al-Fahm, the Megiddo junction east of Haifa, and the
"Checkpost" junction, between Haifa and several satellite cities
lying to its north, Army Radio reported late Friday.
-
- The heightened state was declared after authorities received
intelligence information regarding an attempt by Palestinian militants
to infiltrate the area.
-
- Police and military forces erected roadblocks, and the
entrance and exit to Umm al-Fahm are blocked and the Border Guard troops
have fortified forces along the seam line between Israel and the West Bank
in the area.
-
- In the Gaza Strip, three mortars were fired Friday at
a Jewish settlement in the Gush Katif settlement bloc. No injuries or damage
were reported.
