- TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan's
parliament approved on Thursday a controversial bill allowing referendums
to be held on sensitive issues such as sovereignty, despite vehement opposition
from China.
-
- Parliament speaker Wang Jin-pyng announced the complex
bill was approved at a third and final reading in parliament. It has to
be signed into law by Taiwan's pro-independence President Chen Shui-bian.
-
- Beijing said on Wednesday it would "make a strong
response" if Taipei passes a referendum law without restrictions,
although it stopped short of making new threats, a week after a Chinese
general spoke of possible war.
