Immigrants, Not
Americans, Must Adapt

From C.M.

Will we still be the Country of choice and still be America if we continue to make the changes forced on us by the people from other countries that came to live in America because it is the Country of Choice??? Think about it . . .

All I have to say is, when will they do something about MY RIGHTS? I celebrate Christmas, but because it isn't celebrated by everyone, we can no longer say 'Merry Christmas.' Now it has to be 'Season's Greetings.' It's not 'Christmas vacation,' it's 'Winter Break.' Isn't it amazing how this winter break ALWAYS occurs over the Christmas holiday? We've gone so far the other way, bent over backwards to not offend anyone, that I am now being offended. But it seems that no one has a problem with that.

This says it all!

This is an editorial written by an American citizen, published in a Tampa newspaper. He did quite a job; didn't he? Read on, please...

IMMIGRANTS, NOT AMERICANS, MUST ADAPT.

I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, we have experienced a surge in patriotism by the majority of Americans. However, the dust from the attacks had barely settled when the "politically correct" crowd began complaining about the possibility that our patriotism was offending others.

I am not against immigration, nor do I hold a grudge against anyone who is seeking a better life by coming to America. Our population is almost entirely made up of descendants of immigrants. However, there are a few things that those who have recently come to our country, and apparently some born here, need to understand. This idea of America being a multicultural community has served only to dilute our sovereignty and our national identity. As Americans, we have our own culture, our own society, our own language and our own lifestyle. This culture has been developed over centuries of struggles, trials, and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom.

We speak ENGLISH, not Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!

"In God We Trust" is our national motto. This is not some Christian, right wing, political slogan. We adopted this motto because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented.... It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.

If Stars and Stripes offend you, or you don't like Uncle Sam, then you should seriously consider a move to another part of this planet. We are happy with our culture and have no desire to change, and we really don't care how you did things where you came from. This is OUR COUNTRY, our land, and our lifestyle. Our First Amendment gives every citizen the right to express his opinion and we will allow you every opportunity to do so. But once you are done complaining, whining, and griping about our flag, our pledge, our national motto, or our way of life, I highly encourage you take advantage of one other great American freedom, THE RIGHT TO LEAVE.

If you agree -- pass this along; if you don't agree -- delete it!

AMEN

I figure if we all keep passing this to our friends (and enemies) it will also, sooner or later get back to the complainers, lets all try, please

I'm not sure of the value of propagating more right wing blather on the web, but since it's there and it bugged me, I have to say my bit.

America was not founded by Christians, it was founded by deists and reform Protestants. Christianity as it stood at that time was the subject of healthy skepticism by all would-be Americans due to the roles played in politics in the known world by the Catholic church, and particularly in Britain the conflict between the state churches and the populace. As Monty Python put it, the most interesting thing about King Charles the First was that he was a head shorter when he left than when he came in, thanks to Oliver Cromwell.

As a result of this initial healthy skepticism of religion by informed and prominent persons, we avoided and reinforced the establishment of a state religion. While that means no more nativity scenes or giant graven images in our courts (even in Alabama anymore), it also means your child won't be coming home from school with crap from somebody elses' made up religion, either. That is the protection of the wall between church and state, and only a lunatic would seek to breach that wall. Imagine the conflicts between religious groups in America flaring like they did in Europe's past? Mormons vs. Moonies vs. Baptists vs. Catholics?

In God We Trust (Inc.) is just another part of the plan to keep Americans who might otherwise vote their own interests to vote for right wing sociopaths who are right now disassembling this country. Another four years of Bush and we will just be another marginally educated labor pool making widgets for somebody else, like "socialist Europe."

As for the rest, if he can't figure out how to program his remote so he doesn't have to watch Univision , maybe he should move to India or China and ask the people who manufacture them and provide product support to help him out. It might at least get him off the sofa and out from in front of the Fox channel.

I agree with this much of the letter to the Tampa Newspaper.

On the God and religion part, I agree with the comment from Erik D. Hilsinger.

However, Christmas is more of a secular holiday than a religious one in the American society of today and removing the word Christmas from events surrounding this holiday is like taking the name Halloween away from October 31st. Not allowing Christmas programs in schools to be called Christmas programs is going to ridiculous extremes. People (especially those with liberal bent) sometimes forget there is no right to not be offended. The First Amendment is supposed to protect everyone's ability to say what they think, even if it offends the sensibilites of the majority of people listening. So passing laws or initiating regulations that remove certain phrases like "Merry Christmas" and "Christmas party", "Christmas program", "Christmas parade", or "Christmas vacation" from being spoken in public schools, and even by the population at large, and make it unacceptable for people to express themselves in the way they desire are totally unacceptable, and unconstitutional at their core. This restriction of freedom and other restrictions/laws on other RIGHTS are destroying the fabric of our culture.

Yes, immigrants must accept the culture, language, and citiens of this nation. And they must even accept being offended by some things, phrases, and people if they really want to be part of our society. If they don't want to be part of our society, then they should return to their country of origin or find another naation in which they feel comfortable with the culture.

A free citizenry does not ask its governments' permission to exercise a right. It does not register its exercise of a right. It does not waive any other right, such as the right to privacy, in exchange for permission to exercise a right such as the right to keep and bear arms. It does not permit government to claim the exercise of a right is probable cause, or prima facie evidence, or even a suspicion, of a crime having been committed. It does not discuss, or negotiate, what rights it will or will not exercise with government or with any government functionary. In short, a free citizenry, founded in principles of liberty, does not give up its right to determine what kind of government will receive its Consent to Govern.

Amen to that! These people flocking to America to partake of her fruits and wealth and opportunity apparently want to rid her of the very thing that makes America what it is! How stupid can you get? And they are being aided in this ridiculous pursuit to form America around themselves, rather than assimilating, by very blind people. It is possible to retain ones heritage and still assimilate with a surrounding culture. But some would have us believe the immigrant is being robbed of his or her nature or roots by simply demanding that they learn the language and respect a modicum of customs or social mores -- and not even those, in most cases.

I thnk it would be wonderful if throughout the year State capitols and federal buildings and public schools and such were festooned with the celebratory emblems and trappings of the many unique cultures, religions, faiths and people we call "Americans." Let it all hang out! Let the Hindu's bring their colorful traditions into the public squares and streets, let the Buddhists shower the roads with parades and incense on their holidays and feasts, let the Jews light a giant 400 foot Monorah on the White House lawn, let the Christians put up Nativities and crosses and whatever they cherish, and Islam its crescent and celebrations and fasts. If you've ever driven through Chevy Chase, Maryland between Silver Spring and Washington DC you'll see just that, as there's about 3 and a half miles of nothing but temples and shrines and churches and mosques and synagogues along that road to DC... the flavor of America is unmistakable, remarkable, overwhelming and wonderful. Branching off from there into the neighborhoods is every kind of race, creed, religion and culture imaginable, and endless culinary cultural delights. It's wonderful. There's room enough for everyone and everything. Lets eat at eachothers banquets and share eachother's feasts. We must learn to celebrate just for the sake celebration alone, or we are doomed. We don't have to make our neighbor in our image. And our neighbor needs only learn to speak the language well enough that we can understand one another for civility sake. Because THIS is home... THIS is OUR home, THIS America; there's only one for us all. There's not a second one you can go to if the first one perishes. This is as good, and as bad, as it gets in the great experiment of liberty... and this is as close to free as free men and women will ever be. And we have to make the most of it. The good and the bad. At all times.
