- The S.F. Chronicle must be getting annoyed at the attention
the L.A. Times is getting. First, the Times came out with the big hit-piece
charging Ah-nold "with groping" just days before the election.
That must have made the Chron editors turn green with envy. The best they
could do at the time was to continue to praise a sagging Gray Davis. Now
we find that the L.A. Times is the target of a boycott because of its anti-Israel
bias. I'm sure there is an editorial meeting today at the Chronicle to
figure out how they have been outdone again by their in-state rivals.

their reason for organizing the boycott. You can check the site by clicking

- We previously reported the recent lesser volume of Israel
coverage. Though it has picked up since November 30, it still remains below
levels past. Iraq continues to dominate the news. However, the leading
edge of LA Times reporting on current news from Israel, in the front, main,
A section of the newspaper, remains decidedly anti-Israel, and cuttingly
so.
-
- This last week is a good example. On Saturday the LA
Times reported an Israeli ex-General's comments to suggest that Israel
is a fully guilty third party in providing faulty intelligence designed
to encourage the US and Britain to go to war with Iraq. (12/6/03, "Ex-General
Says Israel Inflated Iraqi Threat", p. 3 - read Text). We did not
see this obscure story on any other major news website. Maybe we missed
it. We doubt you'll find a US newspaper with greater zeal than the LA Times
for scouring the Israeli political landscape looking for ways to negatively
impact Israel.
-
- On Monday the LA Times attacks Israel again accusing
it of abandoning the Lebanese Christian militia fighters who sought refuge
in Israel after Israel's withdrawal from South Lebanon. (12/8/03, "Between
Israel, Lebanon, They Have No Home", p. 4 - read Text) And today's
"Israel Defiant About Barrier" (12/10/03, p. 3 - read Text) keeps
the spotlight squarely on Israel's conduct ignoring the PLO's continued
violence. Israel's justified self-defense against the PLO's inhuman crimes
is considered "defiance". Are we in the US "defiant"
in keeping our soldiers in Iraq?
-
- Interest stories in the back Sections of the LA Times
have included some "less unfriendly" features. We choose those
words carefully. They are not "pro-Israel" because the LA Times,
in its rare so-called "positive" news reports on Israel tends
to present it in a pessimistic and negative way. Typical of this was the
recent long Sunday feature (Calendar Section) on the Israeli Philharmonic's
visit to the US. (12/7/03, "A Different Valor", p. E45, 52) While
crediting the Philharmonic with skill and persistence it portrays the orchestra
as beleaguered, and its outlook bleak. Another example of a relatively
pessimistic and negative view of Israel was a recent Op-Ed report on life
in Tel Aviv (11/30/03, "A Neurotic Normalcy", p. M6 - read TEXT).

-
- In another interest story in the "less unfriendly"
category, the LA Times reported on a local Moslem Football League where
the teams have chosen politically charged and insensitive names such as
"Intifada". (12/7/03, "Taking The Intifada To The Football
Field", p. B1, B14 - read Text) Although there is criticism of the
players, it contains quotes mostly from local Moslem religious leaders
some of whom support the players. Missing is the proper sense of condemnation
and outrage at this glorification of violence that would have come from
including more pro-Israel comments.
-
- An interesting aside here on the Israeli Philharmonic
story in the Calendar Section (see above); the LA Times maintains its online
Calendar section as a separate website from the main LA Times website (links
intentionally not provided - we are boycotting all LA Times outlets). United
Jerusalem attempted to get a copy of this article from the Calendar website
but found that the LA Times wanted money for it.
