Iraqi Attackers Fire
Rockets In Kirkuk

11-19-3

KIRKUK, Iraq -- Attackers fired rockets in the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk on Tuesday, probably aiming at an airport used by U.S. forces, but causing little damage and no casualties, police said.

Two rockets landed in open ground near the airport, causing no damage or casualties, Iraqi police major Ayad Fuad said. A third fell on a small farm, causing only broken glass, he said.

Residents heard at least two explosions echo across the city at around 5:05 p.m. (1405 GMT) and saw smoke rise from two locations. The plumes of smoke rose for around five minutes and then began to dissipate.

It was not clear who had fired the rockets.

Northern Iraq has been relatively peaceful since Saddam Hussein was toppled by U.S.-led forces in April, unlike Baghdad and areas to its north and west which have been the scene of frequent violent attacks against occupying authorities, international organisations and Iraqis cooperating with them.
