- TIKRIT (AP) -- An explosion
derailed a train on Saturday in northern Iraq but the cause of the blast
was unclear, the US military said. There were no injuries.
-
- The explosion occurred around 9:00 am on a stretch of
the country's main north-south rail line, between the towns of Samara and
Tikrit, 200 kilometres (120 miles) north of the capital, Baghdad.
-
- Master Sgt Robert Cargie, a spokesman for the 4th Infantry
Division, described the explosion as "external". On October 30,
insurgents near Fallujah used rocket-propelled grenades to blast a freight
train carrying supplies for the US military, derailing several cars but
causing no injuries.
-
- Iraq's outdated rail system has suffered from decades
of neglect. Recently, the number of incidents of trains derailing and coaches
overturning has stepped up. The cause is usually either sabotage or thieves
stealing bits of the rail lines.
