I'm getting more confused by the day. Let's see? The more soldiers that die, means we're winning, or at least making progress. Hmm, Like Orwell's, War is Peace. In England today, American news reported that the English are thrilled to be having President Bush make a state visit. President Bush was on some clip last night being interviewed by David Frost. Our statesman president remarked that he remembered England from his drinking days and all the great Pubs they have. Obviously George Bush is no Jack Kennedy and Blair no Churchill. Pity us.

As for democracy, liberation, regime change, freedom in Iraq? I'm not too sure how this works or who's running the show now? It appears this new democracy, which should really impress Iraqi citizens and have them coming around in no time is a lot like the security and punishment used against the Palestinians.

Jeff Wilkinson of Knight Ridder Foreign Service reports; Nov 18-03 ( Michael Jackson beat out this story in American media), Tikrit, Iraq: "In a tactic reminiscent of Israeli crackdowns in the West Bank and Gaza, the U.S. military has begun destroying the homes of "suspected" (so much for democracy--innocent till proven guilty jm) guerilla fighters in Iraqi's Sunni Triangle, evacuating women and children, then leveling (the poor dirt huts they live in jm) their houses with heavy weaponry."

"At least 15 homes have been destroyed in Tikrit as part of what has been dubbed, Operation Ivy Cyclone II, including four leveled on Sunday by tanks and Apache helicopters. Those four houses "allegedly" (too late now jm) belonged to "suspects" in the Nov 7, downing of a Black Hawk helicopter, in which six Americans died."

"Family members at one of the houses, in the village of al-Haweda, said they were give FIVE MINUTES to evacuate before the soldiers opened fire. The destruction of the homes is part of a sharp crackdown (some might call it revenge jm) on insurgents in the so-called Sunni Triangle, where guerrillas have downed at least two U.S. helicopters: one a Chinook in Fallujah on Nov 2, killing 16 soldiers, and the other Nov 7 downing of the Black Hawk. On Saturday two more helicopters crashed, after one of them may have been fired upon killing 17."

"Col. James Hickey, commander of the 1st Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division said, "We're going to turn up the heat and complicate their battlefield, driving them into the desert. There they will be exposed and we will have them". {Hmmm. Obviously our James has little understanding that the desert is the home of these people who've fought for dozens of decades one enemy or another.jm}

"Officials at the Department of Defense referred questions to Central Command in TAMPA,which oversees all military operations in Iraq." {Phew--well at least there's no chance of these honchos coming to any harm or being issued one liter of water and maneuvering through mined roads!jm}

"This is something Sharon would do", said 41 year old farmer Jamel Shahab, referring to the Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon. "What's happening in Iraq is just like Palestine." Shahab stood amid the rubble of the former home of 55 year old farmer Omar Khalil, who was arrested shortly before the home was destroyed. Khalil's wife, Kafey, sat wailing (not on news jm) near her wrecked house. "I have no son. I have no husband. I have no home. I will be a beggar". {but now a liberated beggar! jm}

"In the back yard of one home , a cow lay dead, its stomach split open by a large caliber round, its unborn calf half-exposed. A dog limped nearby, a piece of shrapnel protruding from its body. The Israeli military's practice of demolishing the homes of families of suspected terrorists has brought widespread condemnation from human rights and other governments---including the United States." (apparently no more jm).
"There was no official reaction in Washington. A State Department official, speaking on condition of anonymity (or the State Dept. would be most probably leveled jm) suggested that the tactic was not sanctioned in Washington." {Where then? Israel? A sequel to Alice in Wonderland?) "Off With Their Heads. Sentence First---Verdict Later"
