- U.S. officials say insurgents have launched grenades
at two U.S. military convoys in northern Iraq, killing three civilians
and wounding at least five American soldiers.
-
- Iraqi authorities say Wednesday's attack in Mosul wounded
at least seven civilians. South of Mosul, U.S. military officials say U.S.
troops in Fallujah have captured two former Iraqi generals accused of financing
and organizing anti-coalition strikes. Officials did not connect the men
with Sunday's attack on a U.S. helicopter that killed 15 soldiers.
-
- The latest violence comes as coalition officials say
they are considering the possible creation of an Iraqi paramilitary to
bolster security in the country.
-
- The president of Iraq's U.S. appointed Governing Council,
Jalal Talabani, said the force would have broad police and military powers.
It would be responsible for gathering intelligence and conducting raids.
-
- Mr. Talabani also announced he will travel to Turkey
later this month to help resolve tensions surrounding the possible deployment
of Turkish troops to Iraq. Turkey approved the deployment of troops last
month, but the move has been opposed by the Governing Council. Mr. Talabani,
who is a top Iraqi-Kurdish leader, says he will also visit Iran and Syria.
