- Three ambulances packed with explosives, one with as
much as 1,000 kilograms,
- were discovered by US and Iraqi forces here in the past
few days, a senior US
- military spokesman said.
-
- "Terrorists have taken on a new ambitious tactic
in recent days. Iraqi and
- coalition security forces have foiled numerous attacks
involving ambulances,"
- said Lieutenant Colonel George Krivo.
-
- "Two Iraqi ambulances were stopped at a checkpoint
in Baghdad. While the
- first ambulance was being searched, the second one sped
off," he said.
-
- Krivo said "once the ambulance was searched, it
was found to contain over 500
- pounds (225 kilograms) of explosives."
-
- He said Iraqi police found in Baghdad's southern Al-Dura
neighbourhood an
- ambulance filled with 1,000 kilograms of explosives.
-
- "In a third incident, an ambulance was driving suspiciously
near a police
- station. They fired on the vehicle and the terrorists
fled the scene," he
- said.
-
- "Inside the vehicle were sticks of explosives and
three shoe boxes with
- detonators," he said.
-
- The offices of the International Committee of the Red
Cross in Baghdad were
- hit by a suicide bomber driving an ambulance on October
27, while four police
- stations were also gutted by suicide bombers at around
the same time.
