- Twelve Palestinians, including a 10-year-old boy, were
killed over the weekend in clashes with Israel Defense Forces soldiers
in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
-
- In Jenin, altercations erupted after the arrest of Amjad
Abeidi, a leading Islamic Jihad operative in the West Bank city. Abeidi,
Israeli sources said, masterminded October's terror attack at Haifa's Maxim
Restaurant, in which 21 people were killed.
-
- Abeidi, 35, had been sought by Israel for a long period.
He was captured Friday afternoon by IDF soldiers who noticed a hatch in
the floor of a house in Jenin. The soldiers tossed a hand grenade into
the hiding place and Abeidi, who was lightly injured, surrendered.
-
- Yesterday morning, IDF soldiers found an explosives production
plant close to the site of Abeidi's arrest. The facility, which housed
five barrels of explosive materials and two suicide bomber belts, was later
destroyed by the army.
-
- On Friday afternoon, not long after Abeidi's arrest,
a Fatah man, Mohammed Hashash, 23, was killed in the Balata refugee camp
near Nablus in a shoot-out with IDF soldiers.
-
- Also on Friday, two more Fatah activists were killed
in an eastern neighborhood of Jenin when soldiers surrounded Abeidi's house.
In the ensuing exchange of fire, Mohammed al-Kaud, 22, a senior Tanzim
activist in Jenin, was killed, along with Mohammed Abu Najma, 20.
-
- During al-Kaud's funeral yesterday, more violence erupted
and Hamas activist Mohammed Salah, 19, died. Three others were seriously
injured.
-
- Unrest in Jenin spilled over to the town of Burkin, west
of the city, where Palestinian youths hurled rocks at IDF reservists. The
soldiers fired back, killing a 14-year-old and injuring three other residents.
-
- A 24-year-old Palestinian, Ramzi Jarada, died this weekend
in a Ramallah hospital. He was wounded in a clash with IDF troops two weeks
ago.
-
- Meanwhile, five Palestinians were killed in clashes near
the electronic border fence in the Gaza Strip. A sixth Palestinian died
in a shoot-out near the Al-Muazi refugee camp, in a central area of the
Gaza Strip.
-
- Yesterday, two Palestinians were shot and killed when
they attempted to cross Gaza's electronic fence north of the Nahal Oz roadblock.
Wire cutters were found near their bodies.
-
- A 10-year-old Palestinian boy was shot dead by IDF troops
on Friday morning, after he approached the electronic fence in the northern
Gaza Strip, near Nahal Oz. Palestinian sources said the boy was chasing
birds near the fence. However, a spokesman for the IDF Southern Command
said soldiers fired after they spotted three figures who were apparently
trying to plant an explosive.
-
- Near the fence, east of Khan Yunis, two Palestinians
were killed on Thursday night. According to Israeli security sources, they
were killed after approaching the fence with the intent of lobbing mortar
shells at Israeli targets.
-
- Another violent incident in Gaza occurred before dawn
Friday morning, after IDF soldiers from the Givati Brigade and the tank
corps set up an ambush near the Al-Muazi refugee camp. The soldiers' objective
was to stop Palestinian operatives who have been laying mines near IDF
positions, and firing mortars at nearby Jewish settlements. The soldiers
identified a five-man Palestinian group that was planting a mine, and they
opened fire. A 20-year-old Palestinian was killed.
-
- In the altercation, the Palestinians used a 100-kilogram
explosive against the IDF soldiers; none were hurt.
-
- Also yesterday, IDF soldiers sustained light shrapnel
wounds when Palestinians fired an anti-tank missile at an IDF force on
the Israel-Egypt border, at Rafah.
