China AIDS Sufferers
Soar 140 Percent

BEIJING (Reuters) -- The number of AIDS patients in China has soared 140 percent in a year, state media reported on Saturday, 12 months after the United Nations warned of an explosive epidemic in the world's most populous country.
"The figure offered by the Health Ministry is accurate," the Beijing Youth Daily quoted Wang Xinlun, director of the Health Education Office of the China Epidemic Prevention Center, as saying.
The newspaper said the number of AIDS sufferers had jumped 140.1 percent in the first half of 2003 from the year-earlier period. It did not elaborate or put a figure to the rise.
