- BEIJING (Reuters) -- The
number of AIDS patients in China has soared 140 percent in a year, state
media reported on Saturday, 12 months after the United Nations warned of
an explosive epidemic in the world's most populous country.
-
- "The figure offered by the Health Ministry is accurate,"
the Beijing Youth Daily quoted Wang Xinlun, director of the Health Education
Office of the China Epidemic Prevention Center, as saying.
-
- The newspaper said the number of AIDS sufferers had jumped
140.1 percent in the first half of 2003 from the year-earlier period. It
did not elaborate or put a figure to the rise.
