Sniper Weapon

Jeff,

If you will check the picture below, the lead soldier has what appears to be a Ruger 10/22 .22 long rifle caliber rifle. It has a scope of undetermined power but it could be a 4x or a variable power 3x-9x. Notice how the barrel appears fatter than even a bull barrel. This is indicates a suppressor of undetermined origin . I will admit however the rig looks like anyone of maybe 4 or 5 suppressor manufacturers in the states or it could be a local design.

As to the question of the ammo being used there are several available makes of ammo that fit the bill. There is the SSS .22 long rifle solid made by Aguila of Mexico. This round was designed from the get-go for use in suppressed .22 long rifle sniper weapons. It will penetrate something like 12 inches of ballistic gelatin at 100 or 200 meters that is covered by 3-4 layers of denim cloth to simulate clothing. It doesn't produce the explosive effect described in the article though.

Any one of several makes of Ultra High velocity .22 long rifle hollow points could be being used. From the CCI Stinger to the Remington Yellow Jacket to the Winchester equivalent load could be being used. These light way 31-36 grain hollow points would have a sonic crack because they are super sonic rounds (faster than the speed of sound). However these rounds would be more limited in range to like 40-50 meters to still have the speed to act in the way described. It is also possible that the Israelis are using an exotic locally produced load also. This could be made up of some sort of low weight alloy that fragments easy however du e to light weight it would shed velocity quickly and lack penetration at longer ranges.

If you look at the picture several other things can be learned. The first is that the weapon in question is most likely a special purpose weapon as the lead soldier also has a M-16 carbine slung over his shoulder. The second soldier has a large back pack radio like a PRC -77 (notice the antenna bent over his shoulder) and an M-16 carbine.

The fact he is talking on the radio (notice the handset at his ear and mouth) probably makes him the team leader. The third soldier also has an M-16 carbine in his hands so is probably security for the team. The radio also indicates possibly that the teams are receiving at least some target direction from someone else and not operating totally independent of a central command or control.

The above conjecture is based on my 10 years as a peace officer and 3 years as an infantry soldier in the US Army in the mid 80's. The weapon identification I would put at 99% chance of accuracy and the tactical assessment I would put at about 75%-90% accuracy. The picture below was taken form a forum I frequent where this subject was being discussed. I do not have any idea where it came from so I can't speak of it's origins. The link for that forum is http://www.fnfal.com/forums/Forum1/HTML/002673.html.
