The physicist Stephen Hawking said yesterday that he feared the human race would not survive for another thousand years.

The Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University and author of A Brief History of Time said that an accident or global warming would wipe out life on Earth.

Only by settling on other planets could humanity guarantee its survival, he said.

The physicist made the comments ahead of last night's lecture at the Royal Society of Edinburgh called The Universe in a Nutshell, the title of his new book.

He said: "I am afraid the atmosphere might get hotter and hotter until it will be like Venus with boiling sulphuric acid. I am worried about the greenhouse effect."

Professor Hawking, who uses a wheelchair and speaks with the aid of a computer, has motor neurone disease.

He said that space travel would not solve the problems of overpopulation, but without colonising other planets humans were presented with the possibility of becoming extinct.

Professor Hawking also said that the challenge for physics was to produce an explanation of everything - a complete unified theory.
