- The U.S. military said on Tuesday that it destroyed a building where
President Saddam Hussein might have been meeting in Baghdad but that it
could be impossible to find out who had been inside.
-
- "We believe the attack was effective in causing
destruction of the facility," Brig. Gen. Vincent Brooks told a news
conference at war headquarters in Qatar.
-
- "As to who was inside and what their conditions
are, it will take time to determine," Brooks said. "We may never
be able to determine who was present."
-
- U.S. aircraft dropped four 2,000-pound bombs on a building
in a residential area of the capital on Monday after U.S. intelligence
reports indicated that Saddam and his two sons might have been inside with
other Iraqi leaders.
-
- There was no word on the fate of Saddam or his sons.
-
- Brooks said "at this point in time I'm not aware
of anyone from coalition forces that has walked to the site" to inspect
it.
-
- He also said that "we're not sure exactly who's
in charge (in Iraq) at this particular point in time." U.S. forces
were attacking central Baghdad with tanks backed by warplanes and artillery
on Tuesday, the 20th day of the war.
-
- President Bush, visiting Northern Ireland, said earlier
that he did not know if Saddam had survived the attack or not.
