- BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Iraqi
television showed pictures on Monday of what it said was a downed "enemy"
helicopter south of Baghdad.
-
- The black Apache helicopter, still armed with guided
missiles with U.S. markings on them, appeared intact with no sign of having
been shot down.
-
- The television said it came down near the city of Kerbala,
70 miles southwest of Baghdad. There were reports of helicopter strikes
by U.S. forces south of Baghdad overnight.
-
- Two helmets were shown at the scene but there was no
apparent sign of the crew. U.S. forces have well rehearsed drills for rescuing
personnel stuck behind enemy lines.
-
- Iraqis waving rifles surrounded the aircraft. The outline
of a bat was stenciled on its tail and a yellow crossed swords and shield
emblem was also visible.
-
- The Apache is a twin-engine army attack helicopter which
has been deployed in the 1991 Gulf War, Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan.
