- NORTH OF NASSIRIYA, Iraq
(Reuters) - U.S. Marines met armed Iraqi resistance on Wednesday, halting
their advance north from the southern city of Nassiriya, a Reuters correspondent
said.
-
- Correspondent Sean Maguire, traveling with Marine units,
said the advance was halted at the town of Ash Shatrah, 25 miles north
of Nassiriya on Highway 7.
-
- "The Marines have called in artillery strikes on
to the town," he said.
-
- U.S. Marines had earlier resumed a northward advance
from Nassiriya, where they had fought their way across the Euphrates river
on Tuesday, toward Baghdad, shelling suspected Iraqi positions as they
did so.
-
- Marine officers had said they were prepared for further
resistance along the way, especially from irregular Iraqi militia units
like the Saddam Fedayeen, who had held the Marines up for two days in Nassiriya.
