- BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Machinegun
fire and several explosions were heard early on Tuesday at the palace compound
of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein that was occupied by U.S. troops with
tanks on Monday, a Reuters correspondent said.
-
- "It seems as if Iraqi forces are bombarding the
compound. I saw flashes as whatever it was they were firing landed,"
said Reuters correspondent Khaled Yacoub Oweis from a hotel across the
Tigris river from the presidential palace compound. The night had been
relatively quiet in Baghdad, with the city blacked out and the sky occasionally
lit up by flares.
