- It is said that no one is harder to awaken than
a man who is pretending to be asleep. Here in a country where the
majority is belligerently enforcing its right to pretend to be asleep,
little can be done to prevent the juggernaut amok. The worst
U.S. president in history wants the worst war, in the worldÕs
worst way, and he shall have it. And as for those who are pulling
the stiff mouth-strings of our inarticulate little boss-mannequin,
ample information is readily available. Follow the bouncing ducats, and
the dark underground tunnels of material power, and there they are:
the sophisticated covens of the devotedly horned and tailed.
Our root problems however, are not the machinations of the grandiosely
megalomaniacal, who are after all only following the dictates of their
own heartless natures. The cause of what is about to befall
us must be assigned primarily to the psychologically obtuse, proudly spoiled,
and violently ignorant American citizenry. Citizens of our nation, in large
numbers, have happily usurped for themselves participatory privileges in
the same old Divine Right of Kings their own ancestors fled.
Might is making Right once again, and this time with the agreement of the
deluded middle classes in what was once a reasonably honest and decent
nation. From the sanctity of their own heavily mortgaged castles, the majority
has agreed to send an army of Terminators to make short work of an unhappy people
in a far-off land. No good reasons for perpetrating this calamity exist,
and daily doses of ad hoc excuses have lacked all semblance of
believability. Yet this potent concoction of geopolitical snake
oil is apparently limitless, as is the appetite of the populace for
guzzling it. We have devolved to the vanishing point, where there
is no such thing any longer as a lie too preposterous to be swallowed.
Sufficiently overwhelming weaponry is on the way to liberate innumerable
human beings from their shackles by means of setting fire to them
and burying them alive under smoking rubble. A spectacularly
unjust war is about to be brought to you courtesy of The
Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.
As part and parcel of the moribund conscience of America, we have
also become The Land of Sneaking Snoops. A vulture culture of spying, enthusiastically
embraced by private citizens and government agencies alike, is
proceeding apace, to the point of avidly scanning for potential thought
crimes. We are now just a thin grey hair away from routine incarceration for
politically incorrect viewpoints. No doubt the bravado of resistance
to this creepy-crawly criminalization of honest dissent will be tested
for the presence of real courage before we are done here. Meanwhile Uncle
SamÕs nose continues to grow longer and more crooked with every
outright lie, until it requires propping up by coteries of muscular
guards. We clearly do not, as a people, observe our own shadow
of thoughtlessly murderous self-satisfaction looming over the world. Thus,
all hopes for immanent return to national peace and plenty have faded
to black.
Worst is shortly coming to worst, and no one really knows what this might
turn into before the conflagration is over. Most Americans will
be quite satisfied not to know, not to see, and not to understand anything
at all beyond the poisoned pabulum their handlers are feeding them.
So long as the majority can maintain perfect ignorance about themselves,
their arrogant authorities, and the thoughts and feelings of rest of the
world, they will remain in a bubble of touchy complacency. Those in
absolute control of what most will hear have ensured the stark
absence of anything faintly related to journalism. No unpalatable truths
will be told which might upset the desired flow of regular consumption.
Death will come messily, but mostly to others, in gigantic blasts of pure
horror, sealed away from the prying eyes of truth and safely surrounded
by a zone of dead silence. The monstrous facts will be carefully ratcheted
down, deftly twisted into shapely lies, airbrushed of unsuitably realistic
dripping gore, and presented to the world with just the right tone of sincere
fake regret. Our sons and daughters in the military, tasked with efficient
slaughter in a country half composed of malnourished children, will never
dare to suspect the motives of those for whom they are doing the remote
killing. While dutifully employing the latest and greatest of Shocking
and Awesome weapons of mass destruction, they will be tearfully and passionately
supported by the mesmerized viewing audience at home. God Bless America.
My Country Right Or Wrong. Love It Or Leave It. That goes for you
too, Mr. Washington, Mr. Jefferson, and Mr. Adams.
What other fate, besides this particular disaster or something very like
it, could possibly have overtaken us, given the recent history of ever-fattening,
ever-more-oblivious America? Worse can come to worst only if it is
preceded by a multitude of smaller offenses gone deliberately unchecked.
We have been proving for a very long time that we do not wish to go to
the trouble personally to support the principles of maintaining a Republic
with our bare hands. We have preferred to enjoy, from prone positions on
comfortable furniture, the last fruits of the freedom other generations
bought for us. We do not as a society wish to strenuously recreate
genuine liberty and justice for all. We would evidently rather
use our hands to idly finger the controls of our television sets.
We have, by and large, chosen the virtual nonexistence of flickering
illusions, as opposed to the tiresome option of being responsible
citizens in the real world of real difficulties. The boring bother of understanding
and acting on the rigorous requirements of freedom has had ever-dwindling
appeal over the last few decades. Since it became possible in every spare
moment to slump into the deliberate dither of preprogrammed infotainment,
we have gone slip sliding away, down into the dark of the collective
unconscious.
Is there much left here then of basic sanity and the light of
wisdom? We know there is, despite ample evidence to the contrary in
the official commercialized travesty presented as America.
Everywhere there are small groups and individuals, who are not in the least
confused by the reign of the cunning, wielding the force of mass abject
stupefaction. Of course, painfully conscious citizens are perceived by
the bellicose majority as distinctly treacherous to the run of the
mill. And so we are: who would deny it? All sadly self-dimwitted enemies
of reason are precisely that, regardless of their nationality,
to those who think. Fools are the bane of the human race, and fools can
be found everywhere. Anyone can wave a flag, and shout simpleminded slogans
in support of favorite football teams, or favorite invading armies. Such
activities have never been considered direct evidence of intelligent
life on earth.
What then will become of us? We are all equally Americans: those who
are willing participants in our intellectually disgraceful and profoundly
dishonest society, and those who see through the embarrassing raw
vulgarities currently posing as a national identity. And all of us will
have to pay equally for the general madness at large, irrespective
of the quality of our personal awareness. The difference between the
helpfully sane and the hopelessly dysfunctional is based on the
possession, or refusal, of basic common sense. When a significant
proportion of a society repeatedly denies the existence of the fundamental
cornerstone of human reason, all will stagger under the weight of the ensuing
collapse. Such tragic history has played itself out elsewhere, again
and again, and now it is we who are writing the same script for ourselves.
Many will be highly incensed to discover that even the most fervent
denial has no power in the real world, and that the usual effects will
accompany the causes we are setting in motion. The penalties for ignoring
the reality of our national corruption will be substantial,
and whether or not we will be able to manage coming rude surprises
remains to be seen. For who knows what unsuspected forms the inevitable
correction of deep-seated delusions of grandeur might take? Nature
alone has infinite methods of applying the strictest measures to people
who have badly lapsed from all attempts at recognition of self-awareness.
And as for the complicated human miseries we are about to draw
down upon our heads, there is no telling, and the very thought is chilling.
Anyone trying to describe what has happened to the United States may
well sit and stare at a keyboard in mute helplessness. Mere words
are nowhere near the thing-in-itself. Words can only try to point in the
direction of the doom we are orchestrating for ourselves as well as others.
Because this is the bitter end of the beautiful old idea we had
of America. As surely as this is the end of all those we are about
to patriotically incinerate, it is likewise the last straw for
America as we have known it. Until now, the crimes we have committed as
a country have been, in a sense, reversible. Until now, all the terrible
things we have done have been on a plane and on a par with the general
veniality of strong nations doing what they can get away with.
But we now stand as a nation at the brink of ongoing disaster. We are about
to institutionalize a greater magnitude of deliberate wickedness than we
could ever have imagined. We are about to initiate an entirely new
level of state policy of mass murder for sheer profit alone, thinly pretending
to be pursuing lofty goals. The tone of voice emanating from the architects
of the coming genocide is that of unconcealed belligerence. Sheer
unadulterated aggression, resulting in unnecessary agony for
countless helpless human beings, is ludicrously being bought and sold as
self-defense. And when a state degenerates to the level of a remorseless
and crafty serial killer, the final effects will be as devastating
to the perpetrator as they are to the victims. History generously provides
us with many outstanding examples of what we are about to become, but we
are adamantly refusing to recognize our image in that mirror,
just as they did.
No nation has ever withstood the internal decay of the conscience of its
own people. Life does not accept the cheap convenience of willful ignorance
as an excuse. Individuals who believe they would never deliberately immolate
innocent children merely for the sake of maintaining their own standard
of living are nevertheless allowing exactly that to occur. This is
conceivably the darkest and most decisive moment in the history of our
nation. Whether the majority of Americans will have the courage any
time soon to face the horrors of what they are condoning under glaringly false
pretences is unlikely. But there will be no turning back from the
consequences of the real motives behind what we are about to do unto others.
To pretend otherwise will not stand up in the court of last resort for
us all: that of divine justice. The shallow hypocrisies of religious materialism
and mindless patriotism will protect no one. Like it or not, believe
it or not: As we sow, so shall we reap. This is no harmless and toothlessly
antiquated phrase, but an essential and timeless warning. In naked ignorant
arrogance, the United States of America is deliberately leaping
the threshold of civilization, straight into its own handmade and potentially
enduring version of the Hell of Endless Strife.
