A mechanic and electronics expert admitted he planted a bomb in the Bali nightclub terrorist attack, police claimed last night.

Investigators said the man, identified only as Amrozi, had been visited at least twice by Abu Bakar Bashir, the alleged leader of the outlawed Jemaah Islamiah terrorist group, and had emerged as the prime suspect in the atrocity.

Amrozi, from east Java, last night admitted to police he planted the car bomb after being linked by forensic evidence, witness accounts and ownership of the Mitsubishi van used in the attack. National police chief Da'i Bachtiar said: "[Amrozi] used the car to plant the bomb in Bali.

"Amrozi admitted it and we are still chasing his friends.

"They are a group of people who have assigned jobs. Among them is Amrozi, who has admitted having come there [to Bali] and he was assigned to secure the mission and was also responsible for actions in the field."

However Australian police investigating the bombings have so far refused to confirm the claim.

An Australian Federal Police (AFP) spokesman said Australian authorities were not commenting on the claims but it was expected AFP officers would thoroughly investigate the reports.

In a day of extraordinary developments, police inquiries were focusing on:
CHEMICAL equipment and car parts found in Amrozi's workshop at his home in Tenggulun, near Surabaya, Java;
SHOPS which supply and sell chemicals in Surabaya;
AMROZI'S purchase of the Mitsubishi L300 minivan with US dollars, from a man named Annas, in Bali;
PREVIOUS bombings in Jakarta, including a botched attack on a shopping mall in 2000; and
REPORTS from Amrozi's neighbour that he played host to Abu Bakar Bashir in his workshop, which has been sealed off by police.
Last night, Amrozi was being held for questioning at Denpasar police station, after being flown there on Wednesday night.

Amrozi is believed to have worked in Malaysia, the sanctuary for a number of JI operatives.
