- LONDON (IANS) -- Princess
Diana was desperate to marry a Pakistani doctor she had been seeing, her
butler has revealed in a statement to the police.
-
- Paul Burrell, the butler, says Diana on one occasion
went out to meet the Pakistani doctor wearing nothing but a fur coat.
-
- "On one particular evening, which was the princess'
birthday, she was wearing sapphire and diamond ear-rings and looked absolutely
stunning. She went upstairs and took all of her clothes off and went out
wearing a fur coat to meet Dr. Hasnat Khan," Burrell said.
-
- "I think the princess was seeing Hasnat Khan for
about two years."
-
- What the butler told the police confirms widespread speculation
earlier that she had been close to the Pakistani heart surgeon.
-
- Burrell's statement comes in a 39-page report to the
police that has been leaked to the media.
-
- In an effort to make Khan more committed and jealous,
Diana also often saw Gulu Lalvani, an Indian businessman, Burrell reveals.
Lalvani is the managing director of Binatone, an electrical goods company.
-
- Diana later regretted her moves to use Lalvani to make
Khan jealous, Burrell says.
-
- "Lalvani was a millionaire and was also another
Muslim, which I think the Princes thought would make Hasnat more possessive.
In fact, it had the opposite effect," Burrell says.
-
- "The princess loved many of her male friends but
she was in love with Hasnat Khan. He was her soul mate and she begged him
to marry her.
-
- "She asked me to check with Father Tony -- a Roman
Catholic priest -- to see whether it would be possible for them to be married
privately. I had to tell her that this was not possible.
-
- "I had many conversations with Hasnat Khan on my
own, taking him to and from the palace, and also when the princess sent
me out at night to try and find him when she had been contacting him and
he had not been responding to her phone calls.
-
- "I would sometimes find him at Kentucky Fried Chicken
restaurant or his local bar close to Brompton Hospital. Khan is a heart
surgeon who is extremely conscientious and worked very long hours."
-
- The butler said he thought "the princess initially
met Hasnat Khan in a lift when she was on a hospital visit with Susie Kassem
(a close friend) and she said to Susie that he was 'drop dead gorgeous'.
-
- "The stumbling block was that Hasnat Khan could
not stand the pressure placed on him by the press in the outside world
and he found he had no protection, and there was a conflict with his work,
to which he was devoted."
-
- Hasnat Khan used to avoid Diana and when the butler caught
up with him he caught up with the doctor, Khan was often embarrassed, Burrell
says.
-
- The doctor visited and stayed at the Kensington Palace
on many occasions, but Burrell says he managed not to have a police record
of the visits. Often he would give him breakfast and then take him home.
-
- Burrell says Diana would also ask him to drive with her
to talk to prostitutes and she came on first name terms with two or three
of them. She would often give them money and tell them to go home. She
would also often give them clothes from Marks & Spencer.
-
- The princess often bought contraceptives and pregnancy
testing kits from Boots stores, Burrell reveals.
