- SAN ANTONIO, Texas
(Reuters) - A 13-year-old girl was in critical condition after shooting
herself in the head in front of friends gathered in a school parking lot
on Friday, police and students said.
-
- Elizabeth Rangel called several friends over to talk
behind Page Middle School just before classes began and told them she did
not want to live anymore, they said.
-
- Rangel handed out several personal items, including two
rings and a compact disc, then pulled out a .9 mm pistol, pointed it at
her head and pulled the trigger.
-
- "She said she had a lot of problems and didn't want
to live any more," classmate Sade Vega told reporters. "Everybody
saw the gun but they didn't think it was a real one so they didn't do anything."
-
- "She pulled the trigger and there was blood everywhere
and she fell," said another girl who witnessed the incident, but asked
not to be identified.
-
- The girl was taken by helicopter to Wilford Hall Air
Force Medical Center where she was listed in critical condition.
-
- School officials said they could not disclose whether
Rangel had complained of problems to them.
-
- Police, who found the gun and a spent bullet casing in
the parking lot, said no one else was hurt.
