Student Shoots Herself At
Texas Middle School

10-5-2

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - A 13-year-old girl was in critical condition after shooting herself in the head in front of friends gathered in a school parking lot on Friday, police and students said.

Elizabeth Rangel called several friends over to talk behind Page Middle School just before classes began and told them she did not want to live anymore, they said.

Rangel handed out several personal items, including two rings and a compact disc, then pulled out a .9 mm pistol, pointed it at her head and pulled the trigger.

"She said she had a lot of problems and didn't want to live any more," classmate Sade Vega told reporters. "Everybody saw the gun but they didn't think it was a real one so they didn't do anything."

"She pulled the trigger and there was blood everywhere and she fell," said another girl who witnessed the incident, but asked not to be identified.

The girl was taken by helicopter to Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center where she was listed in critical condition.

School officials said they could not disclose whether Rangel had complained of problems to them.

Police, who found the gun and a spent bullet casing in the parking lot, said no one else was hurt.
