India Test Fires Missile
10-4-2

NEW DELHI (AFP) - India test fired its Akash surface-to-air missile, just hours after Pakistan tested a medium-range ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead deep into Indian territory, the defence ministry said.

The msile test was "successful" and was conducted at 4:30 pm (1100 GMT) from a remote testing range on the country's east coast.

"It was a routine test. User trials have been taking place," defence ministry spokesman P.K. Bandopadhyay told AFP on Friday.

Islamabad had earlier Friday announced it had test fired its home-grown Hatf-IV or Shaheen missile, with a range of up to 800 kilometres (500 miles).

Friday's tests comes amid a resurgence in tensions between the South Asian arch-rivals over a spate of killings blamed on Pakistani-based militants during elections in the Indian-run half of Kashmir.
