- NEWPORT NEWS, Va (AP) --
Deer are collapsing dead on fairways at Deer Run golf course in Newport
News.
-
- State wildlife biologists blame a viral disease spread
by biting gnats. City parks officials say more than 40 white-tailed deer
have died from hemorrhagic disease in less than a month. Parks officials
estimate that between 600 and 700 deer roam the eight-thousand-acre park
in the city's northern end.
-
- State game officials say outbreaks of the viral disease
are fairly common, usually in the late summer and early fall. The disease
causes internal bleeding and high fevers, and can kill the deer within
two days.
-
- State wildlife biologist Phil West says more widespread
outbreaks have occurred in the Piedmont area of the state, and there have
been reports of cases in Williamsburg and Gloucester, James City and Middlesex
counties.
