Putin Doubts Grounds
For Using Force On Iraq

9-6-2

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russian President Vladimir Putin told British Prime Minister Tony Blair Friday that he doubted that there were any grounds for using force against Iraq, the Kremlin was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

RIA news agency, quoting a Kremlin statement, said Putin told the British leader he had "deep doubts that there are grounds for the use of force in connection with Iraq."

A Kremlin spokesman also reported Putin's conversation with President Bush, but offered no details. The White House said Bush also spoke to the leaders of France and China -- like Russia, permanent members of the U.N. Security Council.
